“Nyx!” he screamed. “I summon thee…please hear my call for help and forgiveness.” Wetness
tracked down his face but he didn’t care, he had to find a way to save Ezra.

“Darken, you dare to summon me? Have you turned suicidal?”

His body jerked at the sound of her voice behind him. It had been so long since he’ heard it he
thought he might have forgotten, but no, the smooth silk of it wrapped around him, bringing back a
flood of memories he never wanted to remember.

“It’s not me I call you for.” He nodded to the body cradled in his arms. “It’s his life that needs you,
not mine.”

“What do I care about your pet mortal? They die, get over it.” She walked around him standing
where he could see her if he wanted but he still refused to look up. Laying eyes on her would change
everything between them and yet nothing at all. This close he couldn’t avoid her scent though which
was far more dangerous than her beauty. His fangs descended as he breathed in a deep noseful of her.
His eyes flashed onto the black silk gown in his vision, the bare leg visible through a long slit in the
skirt.

“Nyx please,” he whispered his humiliation to her. The begging nearly choked him but he knew it
was the only way. Too much time had passed for him to believe she might actually do something for
him. Oh no this would be about her.

“I’ve no interest in him, he has nothing for me.” Her hand reached out and grasped his chin, her
power quaking through him at the touch. “Look at me Darken.”

He allowed her to tilt his head upwards and he got his first glimpse of the woman he’d loved but
not seen for over one hundred years. Her black hair waved around her face and fell in ringlets far
beyond her shoulders, her skin so dark it looked like the midnight sky itself, but it was the silver eyes
that shone down on him as iridescent as ever that captured him.

“Please Nyx, you are the only one who has the power to save him. Name your
price and it’s yours…anything.” He never thought he’d turn to her again, not after everything they’d
done to each other but Ezra meant everything to him now and he couldn’t bear to see him die like this.

“Do you love this man? This…this mortal?”

“Does it matter?”

“No, I guess it doesn’t really matter at all. But are you sure you can pay my price?”
